Memphis ReStore, Memphis College of Art, The Venue Apartments Partner on ‘ReStore for More’ Contest

The ReStore strives to serve as resource for people looking to redecorate on a budget while helping support Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis – good deals for a great cause – and we’re always looking for ways to educate the public about what we do and the organization we support. So, when the Memphis College of Art proposed a partnership with The Venue Apartments on a budget-conscious apartment design contest, we knew it was a perfect fit!

Three teams of MCA students have been selected to redesign one-bedroom apartments a The Venue Apartments between Jan. 2 and Jan. 21. Their budgets are limited - $500 from The Venue Apartments plus a $100 gift certificate and extra discount from the ReStore – and they’ve been charged with seeking out materials in creative ways, including sourcing free items and shopping at the ReStore and other discount stores. Each team also will be given a “mystery item” that they will use to create an art piece to be auctioned off later to benefit Memphis Habitat.

And that’s not all! After the projects are complete, YOU, ReStore fans, will have the opportunity to visit the apartments, vote for your favorite team and help these MCA students win cash prizes from The Venue Apartments! Voting will take place at The Venue Apartments at 1387 Central Avenue and online at The Venue’s Facebook page. In-person votes will count twice as much as online votes.

Here are the voting details:

  • In-Person Voting – Stop in to see the MCA students' finished apartments starting Tuesday, Jan. 21 through Saturday, Feb. 1. Apartments will be open Monday-Friday, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Online Voting – Visit The Venue Apartments’ Facebook page between Tuesday, Jan. 21 and Monday, Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. to vote by “liking” photos from the apartment projects.

And if that’s not enough to pique your interest, these “before” photos definitely will!

The above shows the retro flair of The Venue Apartments' units. Take note of the mid-century tile bathrooms. The tile and flooring will remain untouched, but the sky's the limit in terms of decor and design for the remaining space!

Students will design the apartments based on themes they’ve developed – Handmade American, Double M (for Memphis) and Modern West. Go ahead ... let your imaginations run wild trying to picture what they’ll create!

"ReStore for More" teams from MCA check in at the front office at The Venue. Clockwise from left: Modern West, Double M (for Memphis) and Handmade American.

“ReStore for More” is a first for the Memphis ReStore, and we are thrilled to be a part of the project. Not only does it provide a means for us to reach out to college students, young professionals and renters, but it also allows us to be involved in a professional development experience for these students through the MCA Department of Career Services. We are really looking forward to seeing the finished apartment and hope you’ll follow the students’ progress!
