Volunteer Spotlight

   Eddie Johnson

Eddie has been a loyal volunteer for the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Memphis ReStore since June 2011. During a recent question and answer session with Eddie, we learned a little more about why he loves to volunteer with us.

How did you start working for the Habitat ReStore?

Well, I had recently retired from working for the city of Memphis and about 20 years ago, I had said I wanted to do maybe a year or two of volunteer work. So after I got caught up on what I was doing, I looked into the ReStore and thought it was a good cause. I’ve gotten to meet a lot of good people. And working one day led into two days, and I’ve been here ever since. It’s like a family here; we all get along and share jokes and help out people we feel are in need. It’s been a good thing.

What has been your most memorable customer experience?

We had a customer who purchased a lamp, like a pool table lamp that hangs over the top. But he returned it and said it wouldn’t work. So I told him I’d take it home personally and attempt to repair it. I worked on it and fixed it, then about a month or so later I saw that same customer out eating. When I told him I had been able to repair it, he was so happy. He even bought my lunch for me. It was a one of kind lamp.

What makes you continue to volunteer at the ReStore?

It’s just a good thing. It’s been a good cause since day one. And it’s a family here. We’re helping people. It’s really fun. People need to come here more often.

What would you say to someone considering volunteering at the ReStore?

Don't think about it. Just do it! It is well worth it and very rewarding.
